Soho

“South of Houston” the namesake of the area of SoHo, is bounded by Crosby, Sixth Avenue and Canal Streets in addition to Houston Street. Once labeled “Hell’s Hundred Acres, because of the box fires that plagued the area of warehouses and manufacturers. The name was later abandoned for a much kitschier SoHo when the artists moved in. They found SoHo to be perfect for their work and residence given the large windows and interior walls in the low rise cast iron façade buildings. Within a few years, artists were displaying their work in these buildings, making SoHo what it is today.

Today, four museums line Broadway in the SoHo area; New Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum for African Art, and the SoHo Guggenheim museum. West Broadway in SoHo is home to innumerable artists who peddle their wares during the weekend rush of tourists and non-residents of SoHo who frequent SoHo’s sidewalk cafés, boutiques and shopping.

Aside from being an artist have, SoHo is a convenient location particularly to the financial district, or anywhere in Manhattan given the public transportation which includes the 1, 6, B, D, F, V, C, E, R and W trains.
